Creaking sound in attic. There are a few possible sources for this sound but none of them ghostly or even worrying enough to call. This can cause all kinds of inconsistent shifting and racking. The wood warms during the day losing moisture and shrinking slightly. Fortunately it appears it s pretty easy.
Clicking knocking and clanking no that s not the sound of chains rattling in the attic. The only way for me to have full confidence would be to go into your attic and inspect all the locations where one piece of lumber is connected to another. For an often lengthy period a house will creak and pop from time to time due solely to its own weight causing the soil beneath the house to compact thus allowing sections or even the entire house to sink slowly and minutely into the ground. It could even be from the heating cooling system or branches of a nearby tree scraping against the roof.
Some of these sounds are normal commonly known as thermal expansion and contraction caused by the cooling of the air frequently in the evening your home s wooden structure and attic beams will contract creating a cracking noise. The creaking sound is perfectly normal and is caused by the movement of roof timbers responding to changes in temperature. So scratching sounds in the attic at night could be from a number of different nocturnal animals. But most of the time it s an animal and it s pretty easy to tell when the noises are coming from something living.
The noise you hear is not from settling but from wood framing members moving in relation to one another. Another primary and fairly mundane cause of random noises within a home is settling. One problem that could be causing a popping sound in your walls or in the attic is pests. What does it mean when you hear a really loud creaking sound from your attic.
